The Reality of Selling a Franchise

Why Most Owners Leave Money on the Table

Every year, hundreds of franchise owners exit for far less than their business is worth. It is almost always the same three reasons.

01

No real comparable data.

Most owners price off gut feel or what a friend down the street got. Without comp transactions inside your specific brand, you are guessing — and the default is to guess low.

02

A public listing tanks the price.

The moment your franchise hits a public marketplace, buyers assume distress. Your franchisor finds out. Your staff finds out. Customers find out. Confidentiality is the deal.

03

You only sell a franchise once.

Buyers do this for a living. Without a broker who runs LOIs, APAs, and franchisor transfer paperwork every week, the negotiation is not even — and the gap shows up in the wire amount at close.

Who Full-Service Brokerage Is For

We will not be the right fit for every owner. Here is how to know if we are.

This is for you if…

  • You own 1+ franchise units and are considering exit in the next 6–24 months
  • Your unit generates $75K+ in annual SDE / owner profit
  • Confidentiality matters — you do not want a public listing or your franchisor finding out early
  • You would rather pay a success fee than a retainer, and you want a broker who only handles franchise resales

This is not the right fit if…

  • You are shopping multiple brokers for the lowest commission and treating this as a commodity
  • You want to list publicly on BizBuySell and accept the price impact that comes with it
  • Your unit is unprofitable today (we can still help — start with the Seller Toolkit)
  • You have already signed an LOI and just need legal — that is an attorney, not a broker

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

How long does selling a franchise typically take?+
Most franchise resales close within 4–9 months from the time we go to market. Timeline depends on your asking price, buyer financing, and franchisor transfer approval. You will get a realistic estimate for your specific brand on the Discovery Call.
Will my franchisor or staff find out I am selling?+
Confidentiality is our standard, not an add-on. We only market to pre-qualified, NDA-signed buyers. Your staff, customers, and franchisor are not notified until you choose to disclose — typically during final transfer approval. Most of our listings close without operational disruption.
What does it actually cost? Any upfront fees?+
Full-Service Brokerage is success-fee only — zero upfront cost, no retainer, no listing fees. We earn when your business sells. If your unit does not qualify for full-service, our Seller Toolkit is a flat one-time fee with no commission at close. Both options are walked through on your call.
How is the sale price determined?+
Your Opinion of Value uses real comparable transactions inside your specific franchise brand — not generic small-business multiples. We layer your unit's SDE, growth trajectory, market, and franchisor transfer dynamics on top to produce a defensible sale range, not a single number.
What if my unit is not profitable enough for full-service?+
If your unit nets under $75K annually, full-service brokerage usually is not the right economics — for you or for us. Our Seller Toolkit is built for that range: CIM template, financial recast packet, buyer outreach playbook, LOI/APA checklists, on-call advisor access. Flat fee, self-directed, no commission.
What is the difference between an Opinion of Value and a certified valuation?+
An Opinion of Value is a directional market estimate — free, fast, useful for deciding whether to go to market. A certified valuation is a formal report (typically required for SBA financing, divorce, or estate). Most sellers only ever need the Opinion of Value. If you need certified, we will tell you on the call and refer accordingly.
